Give out your Social Security on a rental application?

Superman asked:

Hi I’m renting a room from people. On the form it asks for a social security number. Is this normal? I know they need to run a credit check so do they need it to run the check? I’m kind of weary giving it to an individual.

  1. Create a video blog

    I would be as well.

The items needed to run credit are:
Social security number, date of birth, current address and full name. Without the social they can not run credit. Also, unless they are in the mortgage business or a business that needs to run credit they have to pay some one to run the credit. Look at it this way, they have to know who they are renting to because if you do not pay, they will have to spend money to get you out!

They can run a credit check without your SS# When I’m filling out any paper that ask for SS# I leave it blank.

Well ask them if they need it. If they do they do. If they don’t they don’t.
